SHow can one explain the lasting popularity of the bass clarinet in musical circles from Vienna to Brussels? Perhaps because its frequency range articulates an alternative to conventions of popular music, where „bass“ is reserved primarily for rhythmic impulses and the very foundation of the music. Viennese bass clarinetist Susanna Gartmayer’s playing can by no means be reduced to just this, rather, it scutinizes the entire sound universe: she can do rhythm and drone, not to mention melody and noise, often all at once. Who would be a more fitting collaborator than Stefan Schneider, with his minimalist rhythms and subtle cosmic exploration? Susanna Gartmayer has been active as a musician and composer in various fields of experimental music since the early 2000s and plays in many projects for improvised and organized music – e.g. GBK (Gleichbehandlungskommission), The Vegetable Orchestra, BlackBurst Sound Generator, möström and many more. Since 2015, she has been organizing the weekly „Monday Improvisers Session“ in the Viennese Celeste as part of a trio collective. In addition to his solo project Mapstation, Düsseldorf-based musician and producer Stefan Schneider, formerly active in the bands Kreidler and To Rococo Rot, has been pursuing free-standing paths of experimental music in the here and now for over 20 years in numerous collaborations with Hans-Joachim Roedelius, Sofia Jernberg and visual artist Katharina Grosse, among others. Together, Schneider and Gartmayer form the project SO SNER, which owes its existence to a concert in 2015 at the Approximation Festival in Düsseldorf. That same year, they began recording the album „Reime“ in Kraftwerk’s former Kling Klang studio, which in 2015 became workspace and concert venue simply called Elektro Müller. The second part was recorded in the summer of 2020 in Düsseldorf-Kaiserswerth at Stammhaus church, whose interior wood paneling facilitated organic acoustics. „The Well„ is the second album by the duo SO SNER. The album was recorded over a period of almost two years in various studios and spaces and reflects SO SNER’s extensive touring throughout Europe. With „The Well„ the duo explores both fluid and dissonant soundscapes, taking on various structural and sonic challenges. The result is quieter, more introspective compositions than many might have expected. The album is a statement of two confident collaborators creating complex, spatial musical moments in their own way. The album will be released on the same day as the performance at Schießhalle, October 18, on the Düsseldorf record label TAL, which has developed into a home for multidisciplinary artistic activities, research, archive projects, public lectures, live events and recordings (e.g. Asmus Tietchens & Miki Yui, Kopy & Tentenko, Detlef Funder ...). https://sosner.bandcamp.com/album/the-well https://www.talmusic.com https://gartmayer.klingt.org

When the sound tinkerers and DIY synth machinists Ludwig Klöckner and Mascha Illich come together to play one of their live sets, they say goodbye to conventions and traditional ways. True to the motto „What doesn’t fit is made to fit“, they breathe new life into old rhythm computers and tickle the last bit of finesse out of their self-soldered circuit boards. From powerful drones and self-oscillating strings to driving rhythms and filters creaking with resonance, they develop improvisations that unfold a hypnotic pull.
